What Botanical Oil Taught Me About My Own Skin

Shadoh Punnapuzha founder & formulator taila skincare with prana face oil

I grew up surrounded by Ayurveda without fully realizing what I had.

My family originates in Kerala, India, a state found at the southern tip of the country, lush with coconut trees, dense tropical foliage and a centuries-old tapestry of holistic wisdom. Ayurveda wasn't something we studied out of a textbook. It was simply woven into daily life.

My father’s background was in botany and that influence ran deep. The plants around us weren't decorative; they were medicine.

I spent many summers in Kerala. The humidity there is intense, the heat grueling. But there was always quiet wisdom available to ease the body through the climate. My grandmother was adamant about us staying out of the sun between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM because in Ayurveda, this is considered the Pitta time of day, the most fiery, high-heat hours. Pitta signifies fire in Sanskrit. When that environmental fire peaks, it directly aggravates the body and skin. Keeping calm and cool during those hours kept our skin from displaying outward signs of inflammation.

I absorbed all of this the way children absorb things they don't yet know will shape their lives: through observation, repetition and the intoxicating aroma of medicinal oils being prepared over slow heat by the Vaidyans, the traditional Ayurvedic physicians who devoted their lives to mastering botanical extraction.

What I didn't fully realize until much later was just how extraordinary those preparations actually were.

When Everything Else Stopped Working

It wasn't until my own skin began severely struggling that I truly understood what I had grown up around.

My skin became reactive, inflamed, unpredictable and persistently oily. I tried what most of us try: the trending serums, the harsh single-molecule actives, the carefully curated multi-step routines. Some things offered temporary relief, but nothing held. The more layers I applied, the more compromised my skin barrier became.

It was only when I stripped everything back and returned to whole botanical oils that something profound shifted.

The angry inflammation settled. The excess oiliness, which I had always assumed was just my unavoidable skin type, began to balance itself out. My skin stopped fighting and started receiving.

And then something happened that I hadn't expected: my skin kept improving. It didn't just reach a temporary high and plateau; it actually got better with time.

That was my reckoning. All my life I had been surrounded by these traditional preparations, but it took my own skin crisis to show me the true power of what had been there the entire time.

Why Your Skin Accepts Botanical Oil

In Ayurvedic medicine, oil is considered the most bio-available substance you can offer the skin. This isn't a beauty trend; it is a biological reality.

Botanical oils share a direct molecular affinity with your skin's natural lipid barrier. When your skin encounters a properly prepared whole plant oil, it doesn't push it away or process it as a foreign substance. It absorbs it completely, carrying the plant's active compounds deep into the tissue where real repair happens.

This is why an Ayurvedic botanical oil doesn't just sit on top of the skin like a temporary coating. It rebalances. It supports your skin's self-healing mechanisms rather than overriding them.

And because your skin absorbs it so completely, the results don't plateau, they compound. The longer you use a well-formulated botanical oil, the healthier your skin barrier becomes.

Formulating from the Source

Kerala, India Ayurvedic botanical ingredients

taïla was born out of that realization. Not to fill a shelf gap, but as a personal return to something real.

Every single formula begins with the raw plant itself, never a pre-made commercial base. We formulate entirely in-house in our New York laboratory, drawing directly from the Ayurvedic lineage rooted in Kerala.

Through our patient water-and-oil decoction process (Snehapaka), we capture both the oil-soluble and water-soluble compounds of each botanical. Nothing is diluted. Nothing is left behind.

The Origin: PRANA Face Oil

Prana face oil taila skincare

PRANA is where taïla started. It is the formula that proved everything I had come to understand about botanical oil and skin biology.

We formulated PRANA around five foundational Ayurvedic botanicals, each selected for its precise function and paired in exact synergy (Samyoga):

  • Neem: Purifies and balances without stripping essential moisture.
  • Amla: Nature’s powerhouse source of Vitamin C to restore radiance and even skin tone.
  • Sandalwood: Soothes deep inflammation, balances sebum and gently refines texture.
  • Brahmi: Ayurveda’s revered adaptogen that strengthens barrier resilience and supports cellular renewal.
  • Tulsi: Protects against daily environmental stressors that accelerate skin fatigue.

Together, they deliver what a single isolated active never can: sustained resilience, restored luster and a complexion that looks significantly better at day sixty than it did at day one.

What Nourished Skin Looks Like When It Is Truly Fed

The changes are not dramatic at first. They are quiet. A morning when your skin feels different under your fingertips. A week when you realize you haven't thought about your skin at all because there has been nothing to think about. A month when someone asks what you are doing differently.

This is how botanical oil works. Not in a single visible moment but in a gradual, compounding improvement that becomes simply the new baseline for your skin.

What I Want You To Know

Botanicals can be profoundly effective. Profoundly healing. In ways that conventional skincare, however well intentioned, simply cannot replicate.

I know this not because I read it somewhere. I know it because my own skin showed me. And because I grew up watching my father understand plants the way most people understand language, and my grandmother navigate the body's relationship with nature as though it were simply common sense.

That knowledge is in taïla. In every formula. In every drop.

And it will continue to improve your skin long after you expected it to plateau.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a face oil if I have oily skin?

Yes, and Ayurveda has prescribed it for thousands of years. Oily skin is frequently a signal of deep dehydration or a compromised barrier. When your skin receives a bio-compatible botanical oil, it realizes it no longer needs to overproduce sebum. Ingredients like Neem and Tulsi help balance oil production while Amla and Brahmi restore lipid health.

How long does it take to see results?

Because whole-plant oils work with your skin's natural biology rather than overriding it, results build progressively. Most people notice immediate improvements in texture and hydration within the first week. Deeper shifts, such as tone evening, reduced redness and enhanced resilience, typically unfold over four to six weeks of consistent daily care.

Is PRANA suitable for sensitive or reactive skin?

PRANA is formulated without synthetic fillers, artificial fragrances, or aggressive chemical exfoliants, the primary triggers for skin reactivity. Because whole botanical oils are recognized by the skin’s lipid structure, they are far less likely to cause irritation.

What makes taïla different from other Ayurvedic skincare brands?

Most brands that use Ayurvedic ingredients begin with a synthetic or pre-made commercial base and add botanicals in. taïla begins with the plant itself, formulating entirely in-house from whole botanicals that are fully extracted to capture both oil and water-soluble compounds through traditional Snehapaka. Nothing is diluted. Nothing is lost.
