THE MAGIC OF DIWALI

THE MAGIC OF DIWALI

Eyes feast on thousands of lit oil lamps illuminating the inside and outside of houses as the skies are brightened by fireworks. Mothers excitedly are in the midst of putting the finishing touches to the upcoming feast to be served. Women adorned in colorful and intricately designed outfits warmly welcome family members to celebrate the festival of lights.

As the bright and beautiful festival of Diwali nears us, it is a time for new beginnings, self- reflection and fresh thoughts. Diwali, the festival of lights is a celebration that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair. Observed on the darkest new moon night, which makes the festival of lights even more memorable. Indians along with many other cultures around the world come together for this holiday. Millions of people ready themselves for the beginning of this new year celebration by cleaning, renovating and decorating their homes and offices.

One of the biggest festivals of India, Diwali is reveled with lighted lamps, people wearing their finest and enjoying a beautiful meal with their family and friends. And as with any Indian celebration, dance and music is to ensue! Gifts and sweets are purchased for family members and during this time giving to those in need are given much importance. For it is in giving that you truly receive.

It is also a time when families and friends come together and we all start anew. Those misgivings and arguments all forgiven and forgotten. It is all about starting the new year with our best foot forward. Prayers for prosperity, abundance and a good year ahead float amongst everyone and the sound of heart felt wishes fill the air. It reintroduces the joy of simply being. Thus the magic of Diwali unfolds…

As much as I enjoy all the festivities, it is a celebration of something more profound. It signifies the time to be aware of your inner light, it is through higher knowledge we can dismiss ignorance and awaken our soul. This triumph of knowledge (light) over ignorance (darkness) is seen as a path to spiritual enlightenment for all. During this occasion, I take some time for myself to start over, declutter and reflect on my past year in my life. I adore the tradition of lighting the lamps because it truly means so much more. Clean out the old and light up your life in this time of renewal. May you take the time to enjoy all that Diwali symbolizes.

Wishing you a happy Diwali!

Love + Light,
